Island Geoscience

چکیده
As the November torrential rains swept over coastal British Columbia, heralding the more reactive winter field season, I began to think about landslide hazards. Geoscientists are routinely asked to try to accurately identify hazard and risk based on limited knowledge. On the surface this appears to be a straight forward task, more realistically however, it involves specialized skills, experience, and ideally – good data.

متن کاملDrawing on Experience: How Domain Knowledge Is Reflected in Sketches of Scientific Structures and Processes
Capturing the nature of students’ mental representations and how they change with learning is a primary goal in science education research. This can be challenging in spatially intense domains, such as geoscience, architecture, and engineering. In this research, we test whether sketching can be used to gauge level of expertise in geoscience, using new technology designed to facilitate this proc...
متن کاملRetrieval of forest stem volume using VHF SAR
The ability to retrieve forest stem volume using CARABAS (coherent all radio band sensing) SAR images (28–60 MHz) has been investigated. The test site is a deciduous mixed forest on the island of Öland in southern Sweden. The images have been radiometrically calibrated using an array of horizontal dipoles. The images exhibit a clear discrimination between the forest and open fields. The results...
متن کاملTOPEX microwave radiometer performance evaluation, 1992-1998
The stability and accuracy of the TOPEX Microwave Radiometer (TMR) measurement of the atmospheric path delay due to water vapor is assessed over the interval from launch (August 1992) through June 1998. Detailed global comparisons are made with path delays derived from the special sensor microwave imager (SSM/I) instruments and a network of 15 island radiosondes. The results provide consistent ...
